Textures and colors of Uzbek ikat fabrics

I have noticed that sometimes the best way to answer customers’ questions is by making a short video. Oftentimes it is also a good way to communicate texture and colors of Uzbek ikat fabrics..

However, when it comes to colors things can get tricky.

First of all, we all have different screen resolutions and as such, we all see colors differently.

Secondly, the colors of the fabric depend on the lighting. We try to take photos in the natural light. However, indoors with artificial lighting the colors of Ikat fabrics will be different.

Thirdly, most of our fabrics contain at least 50% silk. Silk has light reflecting properties. This is why, depending on the angle from which the light bounces off the fabric the colors of Uzbek ikat fabrics may look different. Those who have ever been lured into silk carpet shops of Istanbul probably have experienced how the same silk rug can look one way from one angle and  have completely different colors from a different angle.

Here’s a short video of our festive “Bayram” Ikat fabric. “Bayram” In Uzbek language means a feast, a celebration. Festivity is exactly what this handwoven Ikat fabric is about. Ikat pattern of this fabric is quite intricate and complex. Each color represents a number of times the silk yarns were tied and dyed to create the ikat pattern. There is a total of 5 colors in this ikat pattern – deep red, yellow, blue, green and brown. White (absence of color) is the original cotton and silk yarn color which was kept tied throughout entire dying ikat process to keep it white.

Now about texture of Uzbek ikat fabrics …

Uzbek ikat fabrics are tactile joy. Touching Uzbek ikat fabrics is like touching well made, positive energy infused organic material. Ikat fabrics are perfectly suitable for fashion and interior decoration. They make beautiful curtains, ikat pillows, fabulous Ikat table runners. Interior decorators love using Uzbek ikat fabrics for upholstery. Furniture upholstered with Uzbek ikat fabrics is incredibly beautiful but keep in mind – this is not the furniture for a heavy use. Ikat fabrics are luxurious and delicate. They are not for a heavy upholstery use. So, if you have a house full of little kids and pets, maybe Instead of upholstery you should opt for using Ikat fabrics as a decoration which can be easily removed and cleaned like Ikat pillows or ikat bedcovers.

Fabric on the video is “Bayram” cotton silk ikat fabric.
