Ikat fabric for upholstery: 3 examples of pairing antique chairs with ikat fabrics
Ikat fabrics are widely used for upholstery. They are “go to” fabric when it comes to creating Boho Interiors with subtle and not so subtle ethnic touches. Using ikat fabrics also creates amazing results when ikats pair with antique and vintage furniture.
The other day as I was roaming in the world of googling I came across several examples where ikat fabrics for upholstery were masterfully paired with antique and vintage pieces. All these examples came from the same website – https://www.1stdibs.com/.
1STDIBS is an upscale online marketplace of refurbished flea market finds. This e-commerce platform (est. 2001) was inspired by Paris flea markets and has grown to be a global online marketplace for antiques, vintage and contemporary design.
I am still browsing their collection and finding a lot of inspiration. Here are some inspiration ideas for pairing ikat fabrics for with antique chairs.
1. Multicolor ikat fabric upholstered Louis XV style slipper chair
This is a slipper chair (early 20th century, France). The style of a chair is from Louis XV era. The frame shows that this is a beautiful antique chair with signs of wear here and there while the upholstery fabric is a modern day Uzbek ikat fabric.. This chair, by the way, is from an apartment decorated by an American interior designer Miles Redd.
For those of you wanting to recreate a similar chair, we have a multicolor ikat fabric “Kuz” which is suitable for upholstery.
2. A pair of Fauteuil Armchairs
Here is a beautiful pair of armchairs in a style of Louis XV. The hand crafted wooden frame dates back to early 20th century. The upholstery fabric of these armchairs is a modern day coral / red ikat fabric. This contrast of the aged old lacquer wood and new ikat fabric gives freshness to the armchairs and makes them totally appropriate for a modern home.
3. Uzbek ikat fabric upholstered Chinese Lacquer Chippendale Chair
20th century Chinese lacquer chair in Chippendale style. The seat was upholstered with a hand woven ikat fabric and the fabric is clearly Uzbek. In case you wonder how we know, please read our “Bold ikat patterns of Uzbek ikat fabrics” blog post.
