Valentine’s Day is around the corner. For those who prefer to give a gift of experience (versus things), traveling is not an option this year – we better be home due to the state of the world. I am not complaining – I have been using this time to focus on my inner self. I picked up Ashtanga yoga, I made changes to my diet, I am on a partial digital detox – there is a lot changing. Still, with all these positive developments there is one thing missing and that’s exploration of a new culture. There is a part of me which can’t wait to travel and I know I am not the only one.
As we think of gift ideas for this Valentine’s Day why not try to satisfy that longing for a new cultural discovery?
I have a gift idea for you and it is a brilliant one! A gift that is beautiful, high quality, exotic yet practical. A gift that speaks volumes of culture and artistry. I am talking about hand painted jewelry boxes all the way from exotic Uzbekistan, a land that has been a cultural hub for millennia on the ancient Silk Road.
A bit of history behind lacquer jewelry boxes…
Lacquer painting art has been practiced in Central Asia for centuries. There is a historic evidence that lacquer crafts date back to 13th-14th century, era of Timurid’s dynastry. Lacquer goods were in high demand and were widely traded along the ancient Silk Road. In the 20th century lacquer painting art of Uzbekistan was influenced by Russian lacquer techniques such as Palekh and Khokhloma. Our hand painted jewelry boxes are fine examples of lacquer art practiced in modern day Uzbekistan.
Not just a Valentine’s Day gift, a unique hand made art object!
Lacquer jewelry boxes are made of high quality papier-mache. In Uzbek papier-mache is called “tosh-qogoz” which translates as “stone paper”. This explains how our hand painted jewelry boxes feel like they are made of real wood. Each box was hand painted, signed and dated by Koshib Omonov, an artist based in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Genuine liquid bronze applied to flower stems of the decoration and borders makes the colors more vivid. Golden and silver backgrounds effects were created by laying an art quality thin foil on a surface of a raw jewelry box. Finally, as the last step jewelry boxes are covered with several layers of lacquer for protection.
Our jewelry boxes are beautiful gifts for Valentine’s Day. These are not merely art objects to showcase on a vanity or a bedside table. These are practical storage items for your valued jewelries!
How to care for lacquer jewelry boxes:
Wipe a lacquer jewelry box with a damp cloth, that’s it. Do not submerge in water.
