“Serenity” teal, black and cream hand painted lacquer jewelry box

UzbekAlive owes its beginning to hand painted lacquer boxes made of papier-mâché .

The inspiration came around 2000 from Koshib Omonov, Uzbek artist of lacquer painting in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The first version of UzbekAlive website was entirely devoted to lacquer hand painted boxes. Slowly we expanded into ikat fabrics, ikat pillow covers, silk scarves and other cultural treasures Uzbekistan offers.

Over the years these jewelry boxes have touched many hearts around the world. We have customers who ordered such hand painted jewelry boxes as gifts for their bridesmaids – an artist customized jewelry boxes by writing names of a newlywed couple on the backside of a lid. People in love used our jewelry boxes to propose to their loved ones. Fathers bought our jewelry boxes for their teenage daughters as their first jewelry box. Whatever the occasion these jewelry boxes win hearts with their beauty and intricate details of painting and make unique and unforgettable gifts.

Art by Koshib Omonov is also presented in Hand Painted Barrettes category.

If you’re looking for something unique, rich in tradition, and absolutely stunning, this teal blue and white handwoven ikat fabric is just what you need. Made by skilled artisans in Margilan, Uzbekistan—one of the world’s most famous artisanal textile hubs—this fabric isn’t just material; it’s a piece of history. Each meter is hand-dyed and woven on traditional looms, which means no two pieces are exactly the same. That little touch of uniqueness? It’s what makes handwoven fabrics so special.

This one is made from an 80% cotton and 20% silk blend, so you get the best of both worlds—breathable and durable cotton with a hint of silky smoothness and sheen. The colors are absolutely gorgeous: a deep, soothing teal blue, crisp white, and bold black details that create a mesmerizing ikat pattern. Because of the way ikat is made—dyeing the threads first, then weaving them—the edges of the design have that signature feathered look, giving the fabric a soft yet striking appeal.

At 42 cm wide (about 16.5 inches), this fabric is incredibly versatile. Fashion lovers will adore it for jackets, dresses, skirts, or even statement pieces in ethnic wear. Home décor enthusiasts can transform it into cushion covers, table runners, upholstery, or even framed textile art. And if you’re into crafting? Think of handbags, accessories, or custom projects that stand out. Whether you’re dressing up your wardrobe or your home, this fabric adds a sophisticated, artisanal touch.

To keep it looking its best, dry cleaning is recommended, but you can also hand wash it gently at 30°C. Avoid direct sunlight for long periods to keep the colors vibrant, and let it air-dry in the shade. With a little care, this fabric will stay stunning for years.

A Few Things to Note

  • Sold by the meter, so you can order exactly how much you need. (For US buyers, 1 meter = 1.09 yards.)
  • Since it’s handwoven, expect slight variations which are natural to handloom woven textiles. These little imperfections make each piece one-of-a-kind.
  • This is more than just fabric; it’s a celebration of tradition, artistry, and timeless elegance.
