Ikat cushions in interior styling

If there is one simple way to decorate your sofa or a bed, throwing a few beautiful ikat cushions is it. Cushions are an absolute must have comfort object for cuddling on a sofa or watching a movie.  In addition to being such a practical comfort item, they are also a key styling tool. Ask any interior decorator what is the easiest way to bring coziness and style to interiors and they will tell you – add some cushions!

The same styling trick works for bedrooms. What trick do chic hotels use to make their rooms so tres chic? Well, many tricks but using beautiful pillows for decoration is one of them.  These pillows immediately add coziness, warmth and a desire to come back – a very important aspect if you are a hotel.

Ikat cushions have become a trend in home decoration adding a unique touch to interior decoration. They are widely used in boho and eclectic style interiors. Even in minimalist interiors ikat pillows find their place bringing a feeling of warmth to an otherwise cold and austere interiors.

Our collection of pillow covers was a natural extension of our own artisanal ikat fabric. Our customers were buying our available fabric for sale to make their own ikat throw pillows and we thought – why not make people’s life easier? And so we started making our own pillow covers.

The materials

For our ikat pillow covers we use our own hand dyed and hand loom woven artisanal fabric. The fabric is a blend of silk and cotton fibers. These are entirely natural materials which hypoallergenic and pleasant on skin. Each ikat pillow cover closes with an invisible zipper on a side (unless specified otherwise in a product description, we rarely use other forms of closure).

Ikat pillow cover sizes and inserts

Our covers are made in standard sizes to fit standard US size pillow inserts. These sizes are mainly square 20” (European 50cm), square 16” (European 40cm), lumbar size 12”x24” (31cm x 61cm ) and boudoir size  (12” x 16” (31cm x 41cm). We also have some odd sizes, which we often sell with inserts as complete ikat throw pillows.

Delicate care is required for pillow covers made of ikat fabrics

Fabrics of which ikat pillow covers are made fall into a category of luxurious textiles. In the 19th century these fabrics or clothes made of them were given from one ruler to another as high value gifts to solidify diplomatic relationships between nations. Ikats are a luxurious blend of silk and cotton, which require delicate care. Therefore, most of our covers are dry clean only. Some items can be hand washed in cold water with a shampoo – silk is like hair, so, why not shampoo? We include care instructions for each product in each product description.

Sustainability matters

We all live in a fast paced world when we surround ourselves with things, which require minimum care. Throw in a washer and be done with it, right? Sadly, we also live in the age when we don’t value things so much. Everything has become so easily replaceable. The ecological problem the humanity is facing is just a result of this attitude.

With our products we try to remain as sustainable as possible in our age. All materials used in making our textile products are natural, locally grown cotton and silk cultivated in Uzbekistan. There is no mass production, no assembly lines, no people working in 3 shifts. Dying process is entirely manual and does not require gas or electricity. Handlooms are manual and require no electricity. The only time when gas or electricity are used is on a cloudy cold when a weaver needs lighting and heating. By 21st century standards this is as sustainable as it can be.
