Suzani history
A suzani is a large, hand-embroidered textile panel; the word comes from the Persian word suzan, which means needle. Originating from nomadic tribes in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries, suzanis have become highly collectable and valued for their beautiful decoration and fine craftsmanship.
Embroidered Suzani is one of the most attractive and beautiful products of Uzbekistan’s handicraft culture. They are mostly large silk and cotton embroideries that are used to decorate interiors of the houses. Suzanis were also an important part of a girl’s dowry. Each region in Uzbekistan had its design pool and style. Tashkent ones are far different from the Bukhara ones or Shahr-i Sabz ones. They embroidered them for different utilitarian purposes, as coverlets for the small law tables, as covers for the beddings stacked into the niches during the day, etc.
